The State of Marriage is the epic story of how legal legend Mary Bonauto partnered with small-town Vermont lawyers Beth Robinson and Susan Murray in a 2-decade struggle that built the foundation for the entire marriage equality movement. From groundbreaking LGBT legal recognition for same sex marriage through a dramatic vote in 2009, the film shows in a very personal way how Beth, Susan and Mary really changed the course of American history.

Their efforts forged the legal, social, and political path in the 1990’s that ultimately led to the U.S. Supreme Court establishing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples nationwide.

The State of Marriage recounts a truly groundbreaking chapter in the history of marriage equality. These are the heroes who fought on the front lines, at a time when national media attention was either nonexistent or overtly hostile. They faced an enormous backlash but they beat it back with fortitude and on their belief that justice would win out.

Knowing the outcome in Vermont doesn’t diminish the power of The State of Marriage. Audiences will be reminded of how far we’ve come, and how far is left to go.
