Primary Duties & Responsibilities
This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned.
Area 1: Food Service Operations
- Provide 1/3-2/3 of child’s daily nutritional needs by preparing breakfast, lunch, and snacks that meet CACFP guidelines for meal patterns.
o Quantities and kinds of food served must conform to recommended serving sizes and minimum standards for meal patterns by CACFP.
o Analyze food labels for nutrient value of foods. - Ensure nutritional services contribute to development and socialization of children.
- Prepare and serve a nourishing breakfast for children who arrive in the morning.
- Transport and serve meals to off-site center as directed, ensuring food safety.
- Prepare snacks as needed for off-site experiences. Adjust delivery time of meals as directed.
- Accommodate and prepare meals according to Medical Providers directions for students with an Individual Child Care Program Plan (ICCPP) for allergies and Special Diet Statements.
- Provide opportunity for children to be involved in food related activities. Prepare food items as directed for child related activities.
- Serve food following program guidelines including family style, pre-plated, or cafeteria style.
- Complete tasks necessary for the orderly operation of the food service area, under the direction of the Food Service Coordinator.
Area 2: Assist Food Service Coordinator
- Assist Food Service Coordinator in ensuring that:
o Quantities and kinds of food served conform to recommend serving sizes and minimum standards for meal patterns by CACFP.
o Food served is high in nutrients; low in fat, sugar, and salt.
o Meal times are appropriately scheduled to ensure individual needs are met.
o Nutritious snacks available at all times. Examples: fruit, vegetable sticks, whole grain products. - Assist Food Service Coordinator in planning monthly menus. Be open to parent and agency suggestions for meals.
- Assist Food Service Coordinator in preparing a variety of foods which consider cultural and ethnic preferences.
- Assist Food Service Coordinator in serving a variety of foods that broadens child’s food experience. Prepare new foods and offer a small amount of new food with familiar foods.
- Fill in for Food Service Coordinator as needed, including but not limited to:
o keeping accurate records documenting menus,
o recording the number of meals prepared for children and adults, and
o keeping food production records to assure compliance with USDA reimbursement policies and Head Start regulations.
Area 3: Cleaning & Sanitization
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of dishes, counter tops, appliances, and sinks.
- Perform weekly cleaning of front and side of counters and organizing of shelves and cupboards.
- Perform monthly cleaning of refrigerator, freezer and sanitizing of trash containers.
- Perform quarterly cleaning of all shelves (removing all items), floor, oven and burners.
- Perform other cleaning tasks as indicated on cleaning schedule or by Food Service Coordinator.
- Ensure rotation of stock.
Area 4: Program Compliance
- Post evidence of compliance with all State food safety and sanitation laws, including required kitchen and Food Manager licenses. Comply with Minnesota Department of Health Food and Beverage Code.
- Know policies and procedures in Minnesota Department of Health Food and Beverage Code, CACFP Guidelines, USDA Guidelines, and Head Start Performance Standards that relate to food preparation and service. Post evidence of compliance with all State food safety and sanitation laws
- Keep accurate records documenting menus, number of meals prepared for children and adults, food production records to assure compliance with USDA reimbursement policies and Head Start regulations
- Maintain accurate records of food production, purchase, storage and inventory.
- Obtain CACFP Food Service Manager credential within one year.
Area 5: Health & Safety
- Observe and view all areas of the food service area and respond immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergency by evacuating children if necessary.
- Report any hazards or unsafe conditions to the Food Service Coordinator.
