SUMMARY:Big View- The Bail Trap: American Ransom
DESCRIPTION:Film and Discussion \nMoney bail is one of the main causes of mass incarceration in the United States. Yet\, few people know what the money bail system is\, let alone how it all works. The reality is that 70% of people in jail are there for one reason: living in poverty. Low-income Americans are sitting in jails for days\, months\, and even years simply because they can’t afford to pay high bail amounts. All the while\, private companies are profiting in the billions each year. \nAudience input & discussion follows film \nFree and open to the public \nGrand Rapids Library\n140 NE 2nd Street\n11:00 – 1:00 PM \nPizza served \nRSVP: michellet@kootasca.org or call 999-5883

SUMMARY:Understanding the Opiod Epidemic - Film Viewing
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the Opioid Epidemic\nViewing at the Grand Rapids Area Library with audience input & discussion following the film. Pizza served. \nRSVP appreciated: robertf@kootasca.org or call 218-999-5883 \nThis meeting is free and open to the public. \n\nUnderstanding the Opioid Epidemic is a 2018 PBS documentary that traces the causes behind the unprecedented growth in the use of prescription opioids and the devastating impact these drugs are having in every part of America. The program captures the story through personal stories and interviews with experts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\, 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. This shocking statistic transcends geographic and socioeconomic borders. The impact on young people\, families\, and communities is devastating. \nPrescription opioids can be used to treat moderate-to-severe pain and are often prescribed following surgery or injury\, or for health conditions such as cancer. In recent years\, there has been a dramatic increase in the acceptance and use of prescription opioids for the treatment of chronic\, non-cancer pain\, despite serious risks and the lack of evidence about their long-term effectiveness. Anyone who takes prescription opioids can become addicted to them. \nLearn more about Big View!
