| Circles of Support
Are you and your family living in poverty? Do you want
to get out of poverty?
KOOTASCA Community Action has over five years of on the ground
experience with implementing and sustaining Circles of Support
in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Circles
of Support helps people build friendships across class and
race lines to help people meet their goals. Three volunteers
from the community called allies, and one individual or family
make up a Circle. Circle members attend a meeting each week
and have supper together. Child care is also provided.
Circles of Support engages the local community to find solutions
to eliminate poverty. Through the friendships made in Circles
of Support, people build social capital so they have access
to opportunities not normally available through the human service
system
Circles of Support is for people who really want to work
hard to change their life and get out of poverty. Each participant
will set their own goals in the areas of income and budgeting,
academics and training, and friends and meaning
Circles of Support is not for people who are in crisis or
people who don’t want to be employed or get more training and
education. Circles is not a "hand out" it is a "hand up". Hard
work, communication, and meeting attendance is expected.
